シティボーイのための教育番組を目指す(!?)、『POPEYE』の動画

Aiming to be an educational program for City Boy(!?), a video of 'POPEYE'

POPEYE』についての動画の始まり

―― When and how did the videos for 『POPEYE』 start?

Miyamoto: POPEYE Web started in 2021 with the idea of "doing things that can't be done in the magazine," so at first we put a lot of effort into videos. We planned a program called "3 Minutes TV" with the theme "You can do anything in 3 minutes" and made several episodes, but we got busier than expected, and that also stopped...

―― 3 Minutes TV sounds interesting...‼

Miyamoto: Then, two or three years later, a person named Arisa Ito joined the company as an in-house camerawoman. She originally worked at a TV production company, but I heard one of the reasons she joined was because she wanted to try making videos of the 『POPEYE』 series "What I was doing at twenty?"

―― I never imagined the videos were born from a single comment by the in-house camerawoman...!

Miyamoto: I was the one who proposed that project, so we said "Let's do it!" and started preparing about half a year ago.

How to make the videos for "What I was doing at twenty?"

―― Those videos really feel like the interview scenes are shown exactly as they happened. Did you consciously plan to make them that way from the start?

Miyamoto: We discussed trying not to lose the axis of "videos as an extension of the magazine."

Specifically, we decided to release one video per month alongside the magazine series, and to film videos during the 1-2 hour interviews done for the magazine. I think if we increased staff or added interview time for the videos, we could shoot richer footage, but by setting these constraints, we are experimenting with how to create "magazine-like videos." Ito-san is the one doing that (laughs).

―― Within that, the title calls and Miyamoto-san’s narration have a playful spirit unique to the videos, which is great!

Videos of 『POPEYE』 aiming to be an educational program for City Boys

Miyamoto: Besides that, we also make videos derived from the web series "USEFUL SPAGHETTI RECIPE", and in the future, we want to create projects using the format of "3 Minutes TV" that we worked hard to make.

―― (Especially with USEFUL SPAGHETTI RECIPE) the stop-motion style and the color of the illustrations somehow reminded me of E-Tele!

Miyamoto: I’m happy to hear that! Actually, we aimed to be the "E-Tele of the magazine world"!

In the future, I want to create a "City Boy educational program" where City Boys can acquire the knowledge they should know, like how to iron clothes, tie a necktie, or make miso soup. But first, I want people to enjoy accumulating one "What I was doing at twenty" video every month at the same pace as the magazine. And someday, I’d be happy if it became a terrestrial TV program like the "Jounetsu Tairiku" slot (laughs).

―― Something like "Professional: The Way of Work" too!? (laughs) Maybe Ito-san will bring it to terrestrial TV like "POPEYE TV"!

Miyamoto: That would be the happiest ending!!

The future of 『POPEYE』 videos is full of various plans and ideas.
