―― 『"BRUTUS"When and how did the "BRUTUS" videos start?
Murata: Video production itself started around 2021, but it became more full-scale in 2023. From then on, in line with the bi-monthly magazine features, ""The concept "What if the feature themes of "BRUTUS" became videos?" led to the start of "BRUTUS ORIGINAL MOVIE".
Although the feature themes are shared, the focus is on enjoying the video content on its own, not as promotion for the magazine. There are projects with completely different approaches from the magazine, and also projects that re-interview people who appeared in the magazine because we want to "dig deeper!"
Also, there is a series reconstructed by adding expressions unique to movies to standard features.
For example, 【Residential space studies】 and so on.
―― Again, "If you look at the "BRUTUS" YouTube channel, there are videos on a wide range of themes. Since the content changes every time, it seems hard to come up with plans.
Murata: Actually, coming up with plans is not that difficult. After all, the magazine ""BRUTUS" covers a very wide range of themes. Just in the 2025 issues, there are features on Southern All Stars, Tokyo guides, rare plants, adventure, literature, and more. Each time, the editors in charge of the magazine brainstorm, so many ideas for video content come up.
However, there was no know-how on "how to elevate that idea into video content." So we had video producer Yuki Inomata join us, and now we have a system where we create videos while having spirited discussions with video production professionals.
"Even if you visit the channel thinking "I want to watch this video!", right next to it, videos of completely different genres are probably playing. But all of those are "It's "BRUTUS." There are videos like music videos and also documentary-style footage. I hope people enjoy these chance encounters as well.
The "BRUTUS ORIGINAL MOVIE" made with the theme of the magazine's feature. In the video for the July 1st issue "Adventurers." feature, mountaineer Fumiyoshi Hattori appeared. The magazine covers his relationship with his beloved dog Natsu.
The appeal of the original content "Quick Q&A!"
Murata: In addition to the "BRUTUS ORIGINAL MOVIE" linked with the magazine, there are also completely new planned videos. Among them, the popular one is the "Quick Q&A!" series. It's a new type of interview video where people from various genres are asked the same questions and give their answers.Originally, the idea started from wondering if we could express "diversity" in a fun and lighthearted way.
―― There are also spin-off projects like "Quick Response: Chef Edition," right?
Murata: Yes. It is a project where four chefs from different genres like Chinese and Italian cook dishes under the "same theme." For example, 【Quick Response: Chef Edition Vol.12】We set the theme as "wrapped foods."In the editorial department, we imagined dishes like gyoza and meat buns... But actually made were four dishes rich in surprise and diversity, such as dishes cooked wrapped in banana leaves. By the way, not a single plate of gyoza appeared (laughs).
―― This project is exactly 'BRUTUS's motto: "NEW PERSPECTIVE FOR ALL"You can feel that core value, right?
Murata: Also, there is a characteristic in the way we conduct interviews. We deliberately ask questions suddenly in the middle of serious cooking, which is just a disruptive way of questioning. Because they answer in an unguarded state, we can hear their true feelings (genuine answers), and sometimes they answer while struggling, which I think adds a live feeling that conveys their personality more.

Videos that even the creators themselves continue to be surprised by the destination

Murata: Since it is linked with the "features" of a wide range of magazines, the theme setting as a starting point is not very conscious of "video appeal." Honestly, for me personally, there are times when I start running without knowing the destination, thinking, "Are we really making a video on this theme...?" (laughs). Because of that, after the video is completed, the creators themselves are sometimes surprised, saying, "This is really interesting!" So, without deciding on a goal like "We want to make this kind of video," for a little while longer, "BRUTUS' makes a video..." while being fascinated by that possibility, I want to keep moving forward.
―― Even viewers say, "If the next 'BRUTUS'—it would be great if people keep being surprised, thinking, "So this is how BRUTUS came at it!?"
